The flavors and the simplicity of these dishes reflect the Mediterranean location and time period of the story. The pork/boar recipe is inspired by the killing of the Calydonian Boar by Atalanta.

The baked apple is a nod/reference to the apples Hippomenes received from Aphrodite to win the footrace against Atalanta.

Mediterranean Pork with Green Olives (for 4)

3 tbsp butter; 1 medium-large onion (finely chopped); 1 tbsp flour; 1/2 tbsp olive oil ; 1.5 lb pork/boar chops (deboned and cut in cubes); 1 can of green olives (pitted); 8 bay leaves; 1 tsp dried thyme; 1 tsp dried oregano; salt, pepper

Melt butter in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until translucent (about 3 minutes). Add flour, salt, and pepper and stir for about 1 minute. Set onion aside.

In same pan, sautée pork in olive oil until brown on all sides. 

Return the sautéed onion to the pan with the pork. Add 1 cup of water, thyme, oregano, bay leaves. Stir well. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Uncover and simmer for another 15 minutes.

Add the olives. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes. Serve as is or on a bed of rice or mashed potatoes.

Baked Apples (for 4)

Wash and core 4 apples. Fill a baking dish with 1 cup of water. Place apples in the dish and sprinkle with sugar. Bake in a 350 degree-oven for about 40 minutes. Serve warm and drizzle with honey.
